Effective Support

The success of our Christian Science Reading Rooms depends largely upon the support of church members, spiritually and otherwise. No matter what the circumstances may be—whether a Reading Room is located in the church edifice or in a spacious ground-floor room, fully equipped—the need is daily spiritually progressive activity.

Effective inspirational support and its inevitable results were proved in the experience of one librarian, who writes:

"For some time now we have made continuous progress in our Reading Room. At times it has seemed slow, but there has been a steady moving forward; in particular, we have witnessed the overcoming of limited thinking with regard to this phase of our church activity. I remember one afternoon when we had not seen a visitor all day and I was tempted to be somewhat discouraged. As I stood in the study room looking at all the wonderful books which were available for reading, I recalled the definition of 'wilderness,' given in the Glossary of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy (p. 597). It reads: 'Loneliness; doubt; darkness. Spontaneity of thought and idea; the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence.'
