TRUSTING THE PROMISES OF GOD

After the many days of flood,
With longing for a sign from heaven,
Noah sent forth the dove out of the ark again.
At evening she returned,
Reconnaissance complete,
Bringing a single pluckt-off olive leaf,
Minute reassurance,
Meek presage of the rainbow.

If sometimes tempted to cry out,
"Give me, O Love, today
At least an olive leaf, if not the rainbow,"
Let us remember the many days
When Noah had no heartening
From leaf or bow,
No prospect but the flood's grim waters,
Yet faithful clung to his rich trust
In the promises of God.

How precious to the student of the Christ
Each slightest sign
That error's flood must ebb at last
Into its own futility,
Leaving the universe of Soul
Forever fair,
The uncontested, undisputed whole!
