THE FRUITS OF WATCHFULNESS AND PRAYER

A High standard is set for the life and conduct of a Christian Scientist. Mary Baker Eddy laid down six Tenets, and these are accepted by adherents of the Church which she founded. The sixth of these Tenets reads (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 497), "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure."

Christian Science reveals that man is the full and perfect expression of God, divine Mind. God's qualities, such as mercy, justice, and purity, are man's by reflection. The utilization of these qualities in daily life ensures for mankind great peace and joy, satisfying substance, and a comforting sense of the perfection of the universe governed by the invariable law of God, divine Love. However, one's recognition of man's glorious inheritance must be guarded with tireless zeal, and Christ Jesus taught that only through ceaseless prayer can an effectual watch be maintained.

True prayer is the spiritualization of thought, whereby the nature of man as God's incorporeal expression is discerned. Christ Jesus sometimes withdrew from the clamor of daily life to commune with God and to reaffirm his spiritual identity as God's beloved Son. After such periods of spiritual refreshment, he returned to mingle with the multitude and to bring to suffering, sinning humanity an example of the true nature of man in God's likeness.
