THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude is a powerful force in consciousness and when mentally entertained and openly expressed brings great spiritual growth, protection, and physical healing. Gratitude played an important part in the worship of the early Israelites as evidenced by the beautiful Psalms praising God. The counsel given in one is (Ps. 100:4), "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."

Our Master and Way-shower, Christ Jesus, knew the power of gratitude in healing, for, when raising Lazarus from the illusion of death, he prayed (John 11:41, 42): "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always." Jesus openly rebuked a lack of gratitude on the part of the lepers he healed. When only one of the ten returned to give thanks, the Master said (Luke 17:17), "Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?"

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, was acutely aware of the power of gratitude, and, in the Manual of The Mother Church, she provided for the Wednesday testimony meetings. She writes (Art. VIII, Sect. 24): "Testimony in regard to the healing of the sick is highly important. More than a mere rehearsal of blessings, it scales the pinnacle of praise and illustrates the demonstration of Christ, 'who healeth all thy diseases' (Psalm 103:3)."
