In 1951 I emigrated and on...

In 1951 I emigrated and on arrival in a large city found it impossible to obtain any kind of work. My qualifications seemed unwanted, and because of the season, thousands of other men were also unemployed. I had tried every possible way I knew to find employment, and I was now forced to take the only road left open, that leading to Christian Science. I sought out a Christian Science Reading Room and was given some literature to read.

Four days later I had two jobs, one through the day and the other a position teaching in the evening. During the four intervening days, I had begun to understand that God is the only Mind and that He is forever active. In the Reading Room, I had been given a pamphlet to read entitled "Restorer of paths," and from it I had learned that man "as God's reflection ... has much to give,—intelligence, honesty, perspicacity, alertness, and ability to express unlimited right activity. Surely all employers would welcome one who had such a desire to serve. And, furthermore, would not that employer expect to pay this employee fully for such services?"

Now no prospective employers had ever asked me for just these qualities. They had always asked for references, previous experience, and qualifications, but those which I had presented had never been suitable. Thus it was for me a very holy moment when, during an interview for work two days later, the prospective employer said: "What we need here is someone who is intelligent, honest, alert, and hardworking. Can you do it?" As I answered, "Yes," I mentally put on the new man.
