COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Just as sunshine dispels darkness, so the light of gratitude flooding one's consciousness banishes the darkness of error and heals. Therefore the alert Christian Scientist begins the day by thanking God for His presence, goodness, and unchanging love. When we are busy recalling our blessings, they start to accumulate, and we are quickly or gradually lifted above error's claim that evil has power or reality.

When the writer was led to Christian Science, a practitioner gave her the sound advice, "Count your blessings." At the time the First World War was being fought, everything was apparently topsy-turvy, and there seemed to be a great lack of good. To be told to count blessings seemed more than ironical. However, the writer determined to be obedient, and very soon she discovered that counting her blessings, no matter how apparently insignificant they were, calmed thought and helped her to surmount difficulties in her so changed daily life.

During the years when circumstances forced her to enter an office, for which she had had no training, the habit of trying to the best of her ability to follow the practitioner's advice gave her strength and poise to carry out her duties. After a period of seven years, other work more congenial and uplifting was offered, but under the condition that it must be accepted rather quickly. Where she was employed, a longer time for giving notice was the fixed rule.
