"CAST OUT THE BEAM OUT OF THINE OWN EYE"

Christ Jesus' counsel (Matt. 7:5), "First cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye," is translated by Moffatt as follows: "Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see properly how to take the splinter out of your brother's eye."

Resolute compliance with these instructions of the Master will forward one's spiritual attainments, because vision, cleared by spiritual thought and action, nullifies the mortal sense of man as fallible, imperfect, or in any way incomplete. The plank of error removed, we cease to see a mistaken mortal concept of ourselves or of our brother men. Unobstructed spiritual vision beholds the perfection of man as Christian Science reveals him, created in God's image and likeness.

The plank of hate dissolves as we exercise tenderness and compassion toward an offending one. As we exchange hard, critical thoughts for those softened by love and as we assume the responsibility of purifying our motives and intents, all mankind is benefited. "I'm willing to meet him halfway" are the terms of the self-righteous. To reach the summit of spirituality, where all meet in the bond of unity and love, one must go all the way.
