While suffering from a nervous...

While suffering from a nervous breakdown, I became so affected mentally that I tried to take my own life. I lost all interest in my family, my friends, my business, and in the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, where I had been an active member for many years. So despondent that I remained in bed most of the time, I stopped caring for my most simple human needs and lost weight rapidly, since I had no desire to eat. In fact, I wanted only to die, because death seemed to be the only way out of the situation into which I had fallen.

My children could not afford to have me taken care of in a private institution, nor could they afford to maintain my home. As it was very evident to mortal sense testimony that I was suffering from a mental disorder, it was decided that I should be placed in the state hospital for nervous diseases.

After I was placed in the hospital, my condition grew worse. I ignored the attempts of family and friends to interest me in the study of Christian Science again. A physical examination was made, and I was told I had a tumor which would soon become cancerous and which, without an operation, would end in death. My son, acting in my behalf, supported me in my decision not to submit to the operation.
