My gratitude often goes out to a schoolgirl acquaintance, a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, who said to me, "Would you like to go to Sunday School with me next Sunday?" My father had suffered severe financial reverses, and we were very poor. I had very few friends, mostly because of an ungovernable temper and great self-consciousness. Also I was finding my studies very difficult.

My mother reluctantly gave her consent for me to go to the Christian Science Sunday School, and I will never forget that blessed day. As I think back on it now, I felt so loved! I asked the teacher if she thought Christian Science prayer could help me to control my temper. She said: "Control it? Love will heal it."

I borrowed the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from the public library and began studying it with the Bible through reading the Lesson-Sermons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. On my way to school I memorized the definitions of God, heaven, angels, and other words given in the Glossary of Science and Health. I have always been grateful that as a small child I had learned the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer, and several Psalms. The spiritual meaning of these familiar passages began to unfold in my thought as I studied the textbook.
