SPEAKING OUT OF A PURE HEART

The scribes and the Pharisees once came to Jesus accusing his disciples of breaking the tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they partook of food. Then Jesus pointed out to his critics that they had broken a certain commandment in following tradition. Rebuking them for their disobedience, he repeated the words of Isaiah (Matt. 15:8), "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."

Later the Master spoke to the multitudes and said (verse 11), "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man." In this experience Jesus pointed out clearly the importance of guarding our thoughts, for our thoughts influence our daily lives.

In Christian Science we learn that to think the truth and to speak it is not enough. Our duty is not only to say that we are sons of God, but also to act as His sons; not only to declare that our neighbor is the son of God, but to love him as Christian Science reveals him to be—the pure idea of Spirit.
