We may not know the man who first spanned a stream or a river, but we do know ... many experts ... have made bridges across rivers and chasms. In every country may be seen how man has closed gaps and brought together communities which have been separated for years. ...

This matter of building bridges is not confined solely to the world of material things. For there have been bridge builders whose names are rightly honoured because they endeavoured to close gaps in social and moral things which were keeping people and communities and nations apart.
