My gratitude for Christian Science...

My gratitude for Christian Science over the years has been unbounded, and for the brave woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who struggled to bring the Science of Christ to the world, I daily give thanks to God.

As I recall the many healings our family has had, certain ones stand out because of the lessons learned. I have noticed that where the spirit of Christian Science has been much in evidence, a small amount of the letter has been sufficient to bring the healing.

This was proved to be so in a condition resulting from childbirth. To be on my feet caused much suffering, and a maid was in the home to do the housework. My husband came home from work one evening, troubled because he would either have to lay off one of his men, who had a family, or cut his own salary to keep him.

Instantly, I spoke up and said that I would do my own housework and that I would take our maid to an agency the next day. I must have been healed instantly, for I thought no more of the condition until the next evening, when I heard that the girl had a better position. Then I realized that I was completely well and felt as though I were fairly walking on air. That was twenty-five years ago, and there has been no return of the condition.

Some years later I was awakened one night to find that our two daughters were ill and that my husband and our son were unconscious, due to what we found out later was carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a defect in our coal furnace. Because there was so much fear, I called a practitioner for help. The poisoning was almost fatal to our son, but after two hours he regained consciousness. The next morning our three children were at school, and my husband was at work.

Long periods of reading our precious textbook. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, have healed numerous conditions. One incident concerning my father is outstanding. His doctor had sent him to stay with me, thinking he would soon die of brain adhesions and a kidney condition. When he was presented with Science and Health, he scarcely left his room for days, because he was so engrossed in it. When I went into the room, he would invariably say, "This is wonderful; this is what I have always believed." Soon he returned to his home in another city, free from his former complaints.

Our son was healed in less than twenty-four hours of what I believed to be symptoms of scarlet fever. Part of that time he was delirious. I realized that the condition was wholly a mental fear objectified and that in reality it had nothing to do with him.

I left the child's room and reasoned that a quarantine sign in the neighborhood had produced my fear. All at once I saw how very ridiculous it was to think that a piece of colored cardboard could do so much, and I began to laugh. With that, all fear left me, and when I returned to the room, the child was up dressing himself and wanted his breakfast; he thought it was morning. There was no evidence that scarlet fever had ever been present.

For these and many other healings I am most grateful.—(Mrs.) Josephine Graves, Princeton, New Jersey.
