I was not searching for physical healing when I became a student of Christian Science. I had been blessed with good health all my life. In addition, from a material point of view. I felt happy and harmonious.

For many years, however, I had had a deep yearning to understand more about the spiritual aspects of life; so when Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, came into my hands, I read it avidly. Then, with growing interest and conviction, I continued the study of its teachings. After about a year I developed a deep desire to test whether I was making spiritual progress. Was I really learning to pray effectively?

I was an inveterate cigarette smoker at the time and had been for some twenty years. During this twenty-year period I had tried to drop the habit several times through the application of human will, but each time I resumed it within a very few days, feeling an agonizing sense of failure.
