SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK

Since Sunday School is an integral activity of the Church of Christ, Scientist, practically everything Mary Baker Eddy has written about Church can be used in our prayerful metaphysical work regarding the Sunday School. And, on the other hand, everything we do to improve our concept and demonstration of Sunday School is of definite benefit to our church, for it brings out the active expression of the qualities comprising Church.

The primary concern of those working in the Sunday School, whether as teachers or as members of the staff, is the welfare and instruction of the children. Consequently it is important that we begin our metaphysical work with the right concept of children. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy provides this concept in her definition of "children," which reads in part (pp. 582, 583): "The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love. Sensual and mortal beliefs; counterfeits of creation, whose better originals are God's thoughts, not in embryo, but in maturity." We need to consider children not as immature but as "in maturity," that is, as complete, as actually not needing anything.

Joy, helpfulness, compassion, understanding, and peace of mind are necessary in Sunday School work, just as they are necessary in every church activity.
