WHERE POWER REALLY LIES

When Christ Jesus was arraigned before Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator threatened the Master with these words (John 19:10): "Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?"

Jesus, knowing where power really lies, replied, "Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above."

Pilate assumed that his position as representative of Rome and its laws gave him authority to dispose of men's lives and property. However, Jesus, endowed with spiritual understanding, knew the true source of power and claimed its possession as the Son of God. He had assured his disciples not long before of his complete control over his own life and existence in these words (John 10:18): "I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again." Later, in the resurrection, he demonstrated this divine power conclusively by presenting himself alive.
