I became acquainted with Christian Science...

I became acquainted with Christian Science after a fruitless search for salvation through my former religion and various philosophies. Inharmony had taken possession of my thought, manifesting itself as family discord, bitterness, fear, want, and a growing secret desire on my part for suicide. Christian Science brought me peace and confidence.

From childhood, I had always been fearful at home and elsewhere, and it tortured me to think of having to fulfill my compulsory military service. In addition, I suffered from long-standing lung trouble which I thought would exempt me from such service. About a year after I learned of Christian Science and shortly before I was to be examined for military duty, I asked help of a Christian Science practitioner. Later, when I was examined, the medical report designated me as fit for any service.

I was no longer afraid, but was healthy and free. For my training, I was sent to the southernmost regiment on the continent. I had to travel alone, and in the face of apparent difficulty found good quarters during the journey. Once at my destination, I became quickly acclimated, and I was able to carry out my military obligations correctly. Although subjected to hunger, hard work, cold, and fatigue, I remained in good spirits and enjoyed excellent health. Holding fast to God, divine Principle, I felt confident that I would in some way be transferred to a point nearer my home, despite the unpromising reports I received.
