PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST

Humanly speaking, to put first things first is good common sense. To spiritual sense it is right and proper, because it accords with Scriptural teaching. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3) is a divine command to own no power or intelligence other than God, to place God first of all. Since God is Life, infinite Being, putting God first calls for a clear understanding of the Science of being and of what Life really is.

When Christ Jesus said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," it was the truth of Life, of God and man, that he meant. If one makes such truth his own, thus acquiring correct mental perspective, freedom from the bondage imposed by ignorance is the result and the reward. Surely this is warrant enough for one's placing the knowledge of the truth in the very forefront of one's efforts.

Christian Science, elucidating the Scriptures with which it is in accord, clearly demarcates between the false testimony of the material senses, by which humanity is beguiled and enslaved, and the fundamental facts of being, which lead mortals from the darkness of ignorance to the blessings of spiritual enlightenment.
