OVERCOMING "GROWING OCCULTISM"

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 570): The march of mind and of honest investigation will bring the hour when the people will chain, with fetters of some sort, the growing occultism of this period. The present apathy as to the tendency of certain active yet unseen mental agencies will finally be shocked into another extreme mortal mood,—into human indignation; for one extreme follows another." This passage should serve as a warning to mankind that all states of existence are mental and that the carnal, or mortal, mind is becoming more aware of and is using its so-called powers.

A knowledge of Christian Science is the best preparation for dealing with this infamous practice because Science establishes in its adherents a sense of purity which is not only peaceful but active. The normal state of the true Scientist is that of eagerness in regard to his study and to the unfoldment of truths which his study brings. As a church member, he feels an inspiration to serve and a deep interest in the prayerful meta-physical preparation which his various church duties require. Because he is made alert by his spiritual activity, he is quick to detect any degree of apathy or discord which may intrude in his consciousness and to work intelligently until those errors disappear.

One can readily see that the one evil—material sense, or animal magnetism—would urge its claim to existence more persistenly as the Christ-consciousness, its destroyer, brings spiritual enlightenment to humanity. And the consciousness is being demonstrated as man's true mentality by many faithful students of Christian Science.
