ELECTION

When Samuel was sent to choose a king,
The Lord required him not to measure worth
By human form, but by the offering
The selfless heart could bring to bless the earth.
He viewed the sons of Jesse, strong and bold,
Till David came, a faithful sentinel
When tending sheep. Then Samuel was told,
"Arise, anoint him king of Israel."

Let us select the one to fill a place
Whose shepherd qualities of bravery,
True wisdom, and humility will grace
The office with a Christlike constancy.
Truth's rod and staff, defending thought, will keep
This one alert while shepherding his sheep.
