LIFE'S GOAL

For years men had tried to reach the top of the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. Many had tried; all had failed. On May 29, 1953, two men, Hillary and Tensing, reached the top. Behind this achievement were months of preparation and the combined efforts of many men of experience working together. Unity, selfless cooperation, and oneness of purpose all contributed.

As Christian Scientists our goal is to follow in the footsteps of our Way-shower, Christ Jesus. He it was who reached the mountaintop we desire to gain. He pointed to the goal and showed us how to reach it. He said (Matt. 5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Mary Baker Eddy tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 85), "Perfection, the goal of existence, is not won in a moment." But this does not mean that perfection is unattainable.
