Some years ago my husband and...

Some years ago my husband and I realized that our oldest child had a rupture. Although we had been raised in Christian Science, we became very fearful. However, we knew that error in whatever form could be destroyed only by Truth, and so we began to pray as we are taught in Christian Science. Also we asked help from a Christian Science practitioner. The healing was not quick, for we had many lessons to learn. Among other things, we needed a clearer concept of God as Father-Mother, and we needed to learn that steadfast patience is confidence in God, good.

I remember in particular one Sunday night when the child suffered an unusually severe attack of pain. I called a practitioner for help, but the lad got no relief. The suggestion of death was so strong that I was even afraid to voice my fear of it. Finally, as morning began to dawn, the child relaxed and went to sleep. I went into the next room, still fearful, and opened our textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to study the Lesson-Sermon for that week in the Christian Science Quarterly. The lesson was "Life," and I shall never forget the sense of joy that flooded my consciousness, completely destroying all fear of death. I also gained that morning a greatly increased appreciation of Mrs. Eddy and her wisdom and obedience in establishing the Bible Lessons as a method of study.

As we held to the fact of spiritual being, the attacks of pain gradually grew less in severity and frequency and finally disappeared altogether. But the ugly physical evidence remained. We continued to claim spiritual perfection as man's present condition and continued to allow the child freedom of action, since we felt that to curtail his normal activities would give reality to the condition.
