EXPECTANCY OF GOOD

Human optimism is not Christian Science, and it cannot be substituted for spiritual understanding. Of course, it is right for each individual to expect only good, but this expectation must proceed from a demonstrable understanding of God—unchanging Love, divine Principle—in order to be brought to fruition in all instances.

The importance of a true expectancy of good was brought to the attention of a student of Christian Science in an interesting way. She and her daughter wanted to find a suitable apartment at a beach resort where they might enjoy a week's vacation. In advance of their contemplated holiday, they decided to go to the resort for the week end in order to look around for an apartment. Before leaving home on a Saturday evening, they were asked if they were not being very foolish to go to the beach without a reservation for the night during a busy season, but their response was, "Oh, we shall find a place."

It was after dark when they arrived at the coast, and for over two hours they drove through many coastal resorts, expecting at each turn to find a place to spend the night. When it was getting very late it looked as though they would either have to spend the night in the car or drive one hundred miles back home. They then decided to do some prayerful metaphysical work in Christian Science on the problem confronting them.
