Church Membership—Its Purpose

At a meeting in 1879, on motion of Mary Baker Eddy, it was voted, "To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, p. 17). One of the early workers commented, "To rise to the demands of this early pronouncement is the work of true Christian Scientists." (See The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, p. 46.) Membership in The Mother Church links one with those in all parts of the world who are engaged in this great work.

Applicants who are ready for membership in The Mother Church, in accordance with the Church Manual requirements, are admitted twice each year.

Application blanks and information concerning membership may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal, or from clerks of branch churches and societies. Applications may also be obtained from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
