NO LAW OF MATTER

To be true law, a law must be unbreakable, a constant force which nothing on earth or in heaven can swerve from its mode of action. Mankind in general accepts certain phenomena as laws of matter, such as gravitation and physical power. It also accepts laws of birth, growth, and death as facts, and it even acquiesces in laws of disease, which it sees developing ruthlessly in the human body.

Christian Science denies the theory that there are actual, unconscious laws of matter on the basis that God is the only lawmaker and that His laws are not inherent in matter. God's laws are conscious forces of Spirit, which are invariably good in action. Liberation from the tyranny of so-called laws of matter comes to those who realize that these laws are mortal beliefs evoked by the human mind and that beliefs can be changed or abandoned. When material beliefs are replaced by spiritual truths, they cease to produce harmful effects on the body; they become inoperative, and the action of spiritual laws is demonstrated.

Mary Baker Eddy says in "The People's Idea of God" (p. 11), "Mortals, alias mortal minds, make the laws that govern their bodies, as directly as men pass legislative acts and enact penal codes; while the body, obedient to the legislation of mind, but ignorant of the law of belief, calls its own enactments 'laws of matter.'
