BREAKING THE EARTHLY SPELL

Christian Science brings to the world enlightenment of the most profound nature. In the face of compelling evidence to the contrary, this Science asserts that Spirit is the only substance, that man is spiritual, and that the material sense of existence is a mortal dream from which mankind need to be awakened. This dream, Science declares, is a deep hypnotic sleep—the Adam-dream of Scriptural allegory—and its material concepts are not realities, but are mental pictures conjured up by the very physical senses which cognize them.

It is evident that God does not dream. Nor does man, whom the Scriptures reveal to be made in the exact likeness of God, dream. The self which dreams is a myth, a self-deceived, self-constituted, false consciousness, which claims to exist and to be real regardless of Spirit's allness.

Mary Baker Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 403), "You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being." In this state of self-deception the individual accepts matter and its conditions as realities. But when he is corrected by Christian Science and his nature is sufficiently spiritualized by the truth he learns, the state of self-deception breaks down, and he awakens to the fact that he has been deceived. His human sense of life is transformed because his thinking is in better conformity with the truth that real life is in Spirit, and man is wholly spiritual.
