THE FIRST RULE AND THE FINAL FACT

The inspired Word of the Bible presents the great fact that God is good and that He is the only power and the only presence. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, reiterates these truths throughout her writings. She makes clear that the goodness of God and His omnipotence and omnipresence are the basis of Christian Science and that the acknowledgment of this fact constitutes its first and fundamental rule. The omnipotence and omnipresence of God constitute the final fact which must be understood by the Christian Scientist.

In the book of Revelation we read (21:6): "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely." Alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and are often used to designate the beginning and the ending of anything. In the verse quoted they point to the fact, clearly set forth in Christian Science, that God is infinite, divine Principle, the cause, or origin, of all creation, outside of which there is no power or presence.

In obedience to the first rule and the final fact of God's omnipotence and omnipresence Jesus built his career and performed his mighty acts. On this basis the Christian Scientist demonstrates God's allness and presence. Our Leader writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 345), "When the omnipotence of God is preached and His absoluteness is set forth, Christian sermons will heal the sick."
