RELEASE CHILDREN TO MIND

The privilege of rearing a child in Christian Science involves the opportunity of seeing that child in his true being as spiritual, an idea of God. A child whose parents are Christian Scientists is taught to understand that requiring him to be obedient in daily activities is simply teaching him, in a degree, obedience to Principle, God. When the parent reasons from this premise, not from the standpoint of human will, he expects the right result.

The understanding and experience which are gained through the study of Christian Science and which are lovingly imparted to a child will bear fruit. Mary Baker Eddy writes in her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 2), "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work—work—work—watch and pray.'"

To express the qualities of God requires effort on the part of the parent. Of course, these qualities are entirely spiritual and are manifested humanly as patience, consideration, loving-kindness, and steadfastness of purpose. Through his daily lifting of thought to God, as is done in the study of the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly, the parent is refreshed, and with renewed eagerness and joy he strives to live to his highest sense the life of a Christian Scientist. But he must be constantly active in demonstrating the atmosphere of Love and security if a child is to be aware of the meaning of Christian living.
