RADIO PROGRAM No. 128 - Divine Help Is Always Available
On this program James Baker of Teaneck, New Jersey, told of his own experience. The program was as follows:
Speaker: We read in the Bible that all things are possible to God. Christ Jesus proved this through his healing works. And he made it plain that divine help is always available to all of us. Today's guest found that this is true. He had striking evidence that God's healing power is right at hand. It was immediately effective in overcoming the results of an accident. Now here is James Baker of Teaneck, New Jersey. Mr. Baker, won't you tell us what happened?
Mr. Baker: One winter night while sleigh riding on an icy hill with a friend, we crashed into a tree. My friend was thrown free from the sled, and I absorbed the complete force of the impact with my shoulder.
Immediately declaring the truth I had been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School, I recognized that God is All-in-all and was right with me at that moment; that in God's kingdom there could be no accidents; and that my extremity was indeed God's opportunity. My friend accompanied me home, and I found my family had gone out for the evening. I realized that I had to do my own thinking to overcome the pain. I started declaring statements of truth aloud, including "the scientific statement of being" in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. (See page 468.) The pain lessened, and I went to sleep.
The following morning when I awoke, it was plain from the abnormal appearance that the shoulder was seriously out of position, although the pain had ceased. The family sat down to consider what steps were to be taken. As we talked, it became clear to us that the condition could be completely worked out through Christian Science alone. We realized that with God, the divine Physician, on the case, the healing would follow.
That afternoon I heard a loud snap in my shoulder, accompanied by an instant of pain and a lifting sensation as the shoulder moved itself back into place. I felt very clearly that the healing was complete. This was confirmed about a week later when I took a physical examination for an insurance policy. When it was over, the doctor scanned the X-ray plate and commented that my broken collarbone was healing neatly.
In subsequent physical examinations and X rays in the armed service there was never any question about the fact that the bone had set perfectly and healed properly.
This swift and sure healing proved to me—at a time when I most needed it—the fullness of God's protection and power which is available to us through the application and study of Christian Science.
Speaker: Mr. Baker, I think it's most significant that the very first thing you did in this emergency was to turn your thought to God and to realize that there could be no accidents in God's kingdom. I'm sure our audience would like to know what you meant by this statement. You faced a situation that many people have faced. However, you didn't approach it in the ordinary way. But through prayer, your human need was quickly and effectively met. By turning to God for help, you didn't ignore the situation, but your understanding of God's ever-present power healed the pain and brought the final victory.
Friends, our guest held steadfastly to what he had learned in Christian Science. In the face of alarming material evidence to the contrary, he knew that such material evidence was not actually true, because it was not of God. This was an opportunity to prove it.
In his time of need he based his approach to the problem on a clear and concise declaration written by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health. She calls it "the scientific statement of being," and it holds a healing message for all of us. Let me read it to you: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."
You and I can make our prayers effective by realizing that there can be no "life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" because God is All-in-all, infinite Spirit. God created nothing unlike Himself. Therefore, the real man, made in the image and likeness of God, must be spiritual, not material. Acknowledging this is true prayer. It meets the human need.
Each of us has the opportunity to prove this just as our guest did, because God is always right at hand, right where we are. When we prayerfully realize that God's very presence rules out all discord, we see the healing effects in our human experience.
Thus we learn that the power of God is fully capable of meeting every emergency. We also realize, however, that we must understand, at least in a degree, the way to make God's power and help practical through prayer in order to succeed in healing.
In connection with our guest's experience it might be helpful to mention that in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy leaves the decision to the individual as to whether or not he shall have a broken bone set. Our guest's choice was what he and his family felt, in the light of their experience and understanding, was the right thing for him to do. Our guest clearly realized that God's help was all he needed in this emergency. So he confidently placed his complete reliance on God through prayer, and this brought the healing. It might be well to add that there have been many other instances where broken bones have been set and healed entirely through prayer in Christian Science.
You see, in proportion as we understand man's spiritual, indestructible nature as God's own image and likeness, we cease giving power or reality to any discord. And we find proof in our own experience of the Bible promise (Isa. 41: 10), "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
The musical selection on the program was Hymn No. 139 from the Christian Science Hymnal (I walk with Love along the way).
