THE GREAT CONFLICT

The signs of the times indicate that major physical warfare is drawing to a close. The cobalt and hydrogen bombs are so destructive in their effects that it is generally recognized that any warfare in which they were used might mean the end of civilization. What, then, is the next phase? Can we foresee it? Clearly it is a mental conflict, a struggle for the establishment of Truth, a conflict in which mental means are employed by the so-called carnal mind to dethrone reason, to obscure revelation, and to subjugate men's minds to the dictatorship of evil.

Such warfare may be the Armageddon spoken of in the Scriptures. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 177): "The hour is come. The great battle of Armageddon is upon us. The powers of evil are leagued together in secret conspiracy against the Lord and against His Christ, as expressed and operative in Christian Science."

It is the anti-Christ now in the world which attempts to control thought and bring everything into obedience to the carnal mind. The Christian Scientist, alert to the danger of evil influences, will bar the door of his consciousness against all forms of aggressive mental suggestion, hypnotism, mesmerism, and idolatry. To do so, he must understand God and His Christ. He must recognize God to be the lawmaker and controller of man, and he must accept as true and powerful only that which is good.
