CONSTANCY

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

"Good demands of man every hour, in which to work out the problem of being." In this statement from pages 261 and 262 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy indicates that constancy of thought and action is absolutely necessary in the life of a Christian Scientist. But how are we to bring this constancy into our lives? One answer may be found in Mrs. Eddy's words when she advises us (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210), "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them."

We must thus make sure that our thoughts bear witness every minute only to Truth. We must always remember that God is omnipresent good, divine Love, the creator of all things, and that He created man in His own image and likeness, spiritual and perfect. We know that Jesus expected constancy of his disciples, for when they slept in the garden of Gethsemane, he asked in surprise and disappointment (Matt. 26:40), "What, could ye not watch with me one hour?" He exhorted them, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation."

Constant watchfulness and alertness, by which we keep our thinking pure and free from all evil, is ceaseless prayer. Such prayer is practical and effective, giving us an abiding sense of the ever-presence of Spirit, God, and leading us to a deeper understanding of heaven, eternal harmony.
