REFUSE TO COME DOWN!

The Bible narrative of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem as related in the book of Nehemiah offers much in the way of instruction and inspiration to the student of Christian Science.

Nehemiah was at Shushan, the winter capital of the kings of Persia, acting in the capacity of cupbearer to the reigning king, when he received word of the deplorable state of affairs at Jerusalem. He was deeply grieved, but he realized that it was his people's turning away from worshiping the one true God that had brought them into this unhappy situation. Turning to God wholeheartedly for guidance, he was able to return to Jerusalem. He found that the walls "were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire." Quietly he began preparations for the stupendous task of rebuilding the walls.

The depth of Nehemiah's dedication to his high purpose is indicated in his willingness, even longing, to leave the easy, luxurious life of a king's palace in order to devote himself to what he knew was to be a difficult and hazardous undertaking. Nowhere in the narrative is it indicated that he spent any time bemoaning the sacrifices he must make to consummate this service to God and to his people.
