IN EARTH, AS IN HEAVEN

The invocation in the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:10), "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven," is interpreted by Mary Baker Eddy in these words (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17): "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme." Christian Science healings stand as proof that divine power is always available to mankind. Each healing evidences divinity embracing humanity, divine law being brought to bear upon the conditions and affairs of men. Through this Science mankind has a higher than material solution at hand for every kind of problem—the understanding of divine Mind and its supremacy over all.

Christ Jesus addressed God as "Lord of heaven and earth" (Luke 10:21). He knew the Father of all to be Spirit, and he understood man, God's perfect son, to be God-governed. He realized that the fleshly sense of life is illusion—that it "profiteth nothing." In his own example of teaching that man is not a mortal, but an immortal, dwelling in Spirit eternally, Jesus ascended above the material sense of life by proving the supremacy of God's will, His law, over material illusion. One of his final statements was (Matt. 28:18), "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth."

The Master's method is the method of Christian Science, which is based upon his example and precepts. Christian Science reveals absolute being, in which God is supersensible Deity, dwelling in His own light and unfolding His glory by means of His incorporeal ideas, of which man is the highest. This Science declares the illusiveness of the material phenomena, which hide from humanity the true view of God and man. It exposes the falsity of the corporeal sense of life, in which these limiting phenomena appear. But Christian Science shows that the kingdom of God is not taken by force. The truths of being must be worked out in Christly proof of their reality. Material illusion must be proved powerless. The divine nature must be expressed through humaneness. Spiritual law must be established in human life.
