Early in my experience in Christian Science...
Early in my experience in Christian Science I woke in the night with symptoms of a bad cold. Since I did not yet know how to put Christian Science into practice, I asked God to show me. At once I recalled that a few days before, a practitioner had told me of the value of being willing "to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8). It dawned on me that the real man is always present with the Lord. This realization of a basic truth made me very happy, and for several minutes I forgot my body. Then I realized that the symptoms of the cold had entirely vanished.
Another blessing which has meant much to me was the healing of warts. They had started when I was in my early teens and knew nothing about Christian Science. These warts multiplied until there were scores of them on my knuckles and bordering my nails. The ones on the knuckles grew larger and larger. I had found from experience that material methods for their removal were unsuccessful. After taking up the earnest study of Christian Science and later after having had class instruction, I started to wash my hands one morning and was astonished to see that there was no trace of any warts. That was thirty years ago, and there has been no return of them.
A few years ago, shortly before the annual meeting of the association of pupils to which I belong, I awoke in the morning with a numbness in my left hand. The thumb, index and middle fingers all appeared to be useless. Knowing that it was not contrary to God's will to make the overnight journey and attend the association meeting, I silently prayed in these words from Science and Health (p. 33): "'Not my will, but Thine, be done!'—that is, Let not the flesh, but the Spirit, be represented in me." The condition continued for two days, but on the third day the hand was normal. The journey to the association meeting was made, and there has been no return of the difficulty. How thankful I am that I can be about my Father's business in the way Jesus taught his disciples.
