FROM EARTH TO HEAVEN

He said. "Could ye not watch with me one hour?"
This heartfelt yearning met with no response
From those to whom the Master gave his all
Of loving comfort and of tender care.
And opened wide the very gates of heaven
By teaching them the kingdom is within.
All this lay unperceived in that dark hour.
When the human senses struggled for a space,
And drew from him the cry, "Let this cup pass."
No one was there to take the cup from him.
Or share it in his time of greatest need.
As we today read of that sacred hour.
Our hearts are stirred with love and deep concern.
Had we been there, would we have left him so?
And yet we see a higher, holier theme.
Casting a light upon the lonely way.
The truth: that each of us must also turn
From earth to heaven, if we would hope to claim
Our resurrection, and inscribe upon
The tablet of our heart the sole allegiance
Due our heavenly Father-Mother God.
