Mary Baker Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 178), "The remote cause or belief of disease is not dangerous because of its priority and the connection of past mortal thoughts with present."

Treatment in Christian Science sometimes uncovers the patient's fear that because he has wrestled with his problem for a long period of time, his chances of healing are thereby lessened. Frequently the practitioner is told by such a patient: "I have endured this trouble for years. Maybe it has such a strong hold on me after all this time that I should not expect a healing."
