I had known of Christian Science...
I had known of Christian Science for a number of years before I became a student of it. Whenever a certain aunt of mine visited us, I was delegated to take her to a Church of Christ, Scientist. I resented having to go, and when Christian Science literature was sent to me, it was never opened. Nevertheless, the little seeds of Truth finally took root, and about thirty years ago I found that "man's extremity is God's opportunity."
One of our children had an operation for a mastoid condition. It did not prove successful, and another operation was scheduled. The ear specialist told us that he had already gone to within a sixteenth of an inch of the brain and that the outcome was dubious. At this time the aunt I mentioned was led to write and ask me if I would like a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was ready to accept the offer, as I had visited various bookstores trying to find a book on Christian Science. At that time I did not know about the Reading Rooms. For three days I did little else but read Science and Health.
Early in the morning on the day scheduled for the operation, I called a friend with whom I had discussed Christian Science. She knew very little more about this religion than I did, but I shall always be grateful that she urged me to try it. I got in touch with a practitioner, who arrived in a very short time. My many questions were satisfactorily answered. One was in regard to the second commandment, in which God is referred to as "visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments" (Ex. 20:5, 6). This was explained as follows: The false beliefs of the fathers are told to the children and the children's children of them that hate, or do not understand, God; but all good is for those who love, or do understand, Him. This explanation was very clear to me.
