"HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE"

[Original article in German]

Does not every oppressed person breathe more freely as he awakens to the understanding that the Christ is able to lead "captivity captive"? In his letter to the Ephesians the Apostle Paul wrote (4:8), "When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men."

Mortal man is always a captive. His captivity consists of bonds, limitations, afflictions, darkness, fear, inability, and so on. The source of this captivity is what Mary Baker Eddy designates as mortal mind. Bare walls, barred windows, limited outlook, scanty food, and the confinement and severity of a prison cell, whether mental or material, always arouse in the human consciousness a yearning for freedom.

Christian Science meets this yearning for freedom in the most effective way, namely by leading human consciousness to a pure and practical understanding of God.
