COUNTERFEIT AND COUNTERPART
A counterfeit coin is fabricated with the intent to deceive and defraud and depends upon appearance instead of upon value and quality. In Christian Science, we learn that the mortal, material concept of man is a counterfeit. If we accept it as true and genuine, we are defrauded of man's heritage of dominion, peace, health, and satisfaction.
A counterpart, on the other hand, is not an imitation, but that which bears a close resemblance to something. For example, the counterpart of a seal is its impress. The seal and its impress correspond exactly and complement one another. In his relation to God, man corresponds exactly to his original; he does not pretend to be God, but manifests the perfection and completeness of God. Because the completeness of God includes His children, or spiritual ideas, there is never a moment when this counterpart of God is lacking.
God and man are the two aspects of complete and perfect being: God the Father-Mother Mind, man His compound idea; God the creator, man the creation; God the artist, man the expression. As a seal's character is made manifest by the imprint, or counterpart, similarly God's wholeness is made manifest by His compound idea, man.
