WHAT IS OUR BUSINESS?
Christian Science reveals but one creator and one creation— Spirit and its spiritual ideas. This revelation is of vital importance to all men. Its acceptance by any sincere individual begins immediately to correct the errors of material sense and to improve all the conditions and activities of human existence. Referring to the spiritual nature of existence, Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 265), "This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man's absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace."
Who would not welcome such an inheritance—"enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace"? This inheritance is already ours by reflection as sons of God. Our work, our true business, is to acknowledge this heritage and to prove in daily living that we possess it.
God never abandons His creation, but keeps it at the point of perfection and constant newness through the Christ, the power and activity of His perfect nature. This is God's business. And the business of Jesus was to reveal and prove to men the eternal love of God for His ideas and His perpetual provision for their welfare. At the age of twelve he said to his parents (Luke 2:49), "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" His mission was twofold: to maintain a constant sense of unity with Spirit—to prove the power of the Christ; and to rebuke the errors of material sense and establish the harmony of spiritual sense in human experience. This was the business to which Jesus devoted his entire thought and energy, and it is the true business of every man, woman, and child.
