My heart is filled with gratitude...

My heart is filled with gratitude to God for having led me to an understanding of Christian Science. Near the end of World War II my materialistic point of view regarding life suffered a complete breakdown. I had heard of Christian Science, and I wanted to know what kind of help it had to offer me.

As a German prisoner in an English prisoner-of-war camp, I was allowed to get in touch with a representative of the Committee on Christian Science Wartime Activities. An authorized Christian Science Wartime Worker was permitted to come to see me, and he provided me with a Bible, the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and authorized periodicals. The truths I found in them and the kindness I was shown were like the good Samaritan's "pouring in oil and wine" (Luke 10:34).

Gratefully I remember the time when I was taken to the Sunday services of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. The hymns, the solo, and the reading from the desk were uplifting and inspiring. In the days following, members of this church generously helped me to find my way back to a useful life. Acute fear was overcome, as well as the smoking and drinking habits; and headaches, from which I had suffered much, were healed. Many other healings followed, all of which have been permanent.
