Many of us who have had the...

Many of us who have had the privilege of being reared in the teachings of Christian Science often do not realize how great has been our protection. We take this for granted as something we have become accustomed to expect from Christian Science. Long afterward when our attention is called to it, we realize the far-reaching extent of our protection.

Several years ago, complying with conditions relative to employment, I was given a routine physical examination by a company doctor. When he looked into my ears he said, "Having never seen your inner ear, you may not realize the existence of scar tissue there; this indicates that at some time there was an infection rather serious in nature." He asked if I recalled having had any ear trouble. I told him that I did, but that it had been a number of years ago, and since there had been no return of the trouble, I had forgotten it. He said that it was by no means a rare infection, but that usually the hearing was left partially or completely impaired. He then tested my hearing and found it normal.

I was aware of the problem while I was in junior college, where once or twice a week I went swimming in a tank filled with water which had a high chlorine content. When a painful condition in the head and ears developed, I relied exclusively on Christian Science to meet it, and I did not discuss it with anyone. During the day I maintained a sense of joy by singing hymns, sometimes for hours on end. At night before dropping off to sleep I repeated the twenty-third Psalm, using the interpretation our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, gives us on page 578 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
