SAFEGUARDING CONSCIOUSNESS

It is important to maintain the human consciousness at the highest level of which one is capable, for upon this depends one's ability to receive the Christ, the true idea of sonship.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the marginal heading "The Son of God," Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 332), "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness." To receive the fullness of the Christ, or divine message from God, the human consciousness must become so spiritualized that it is wholly conscious of God, Spirit, and His formations and totally unconscious of matter, evil, and its spurious formations.

If we are completely aware of Spirit, God, we cannot be conscious of matter or evil. Is not this what Paul meant when he spoke of being "willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" (II Cor. 5:8)? Similarly, if we allow matter or evil in any form to dominate consciousness, we cannot then be fully aware of Spirit, God, good.
