THE MILLENNIUM

One of the most portentous problems confronting humanity today is how to establish in human thought the millennial estate of peace and brotherly love, which is so beautifully pictured in the sixty-fifth chapter of Isaiah. Many thoughtful men and women of differing creeds and races are earnestly seeking the solution of this vital world problem. Insofar, however, as mankind turn to material methods for the answer, to that extent will they inevitably fail. Christian Science teaches that the cure for all human ills is to be found in the inspired Word of the Bible as interpreted by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

Turning to the Scriptures for enlightenment on this subject, we find one of the reasons for human warfare illustrated by the conflict between Cain and his brother Abel. The story relates that both Cain and Abel brought an offering unto the Lord; and the Lord accepted Abel's gift, but did not accept Cain's offering. The Bible states (Gen. 4:8), "Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."

The interpretation of this passage on page 541 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, is illuminating. She writes, "The erroneous belief that life, substance, and intelligence can be material ruptures the life and brotherhood of man at the very outset." Thus we learn that it is the deep-seated erroneous belief of mortals that matter is intelligent, substantial, and causative which is at the root of devastating wars.
