MENTAL SCULPTURE

For the first time in many centuries mankind is beginning to realize that there is something fundamentally wrong with its concept of how to protect itself from what it regards as wholesale destruction. Many are admitting that only the light of spiritual understanding can bring hope to a world torn with fear, greed, anxiety, and war.

As Christian Scientists, we know that liberation can come only through an awakening to the spiritual understanding of God and of man's true relationship to Him; through obedience to God and love for our fellow man. Only in this way can what appear to be harrowing outlines of destruction, greed, hatred, and selfishness be replaced by hope, justice, holiness, and love. In Psalms we read (145:18), "The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth."

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 248): "The sculptor turns from the marble to his model in order to perfect his conception. We are all sculptors, working at various forms, moulding and chiseling thought. What is the model before mortal mind? Is it imperfection, joy, sorrow, sin, suffering? Have you accepted the mortal model? Are you reproducing it? Then you are haunted in your work by vicious sculptors and hideous forms."
