I took up the study of Christian Science...

I took up the study of Christian Science not because I was seeking a physical healing, but because of a deep desire to understand God. However, Christian Science has healed me of various discords, including dysentery, measles, colds, and severe headaches, which left me prostrate.

When I was clerk of a Church of Christ, Scientist, in South Africa, I returned home alone one night at a very late hour. After alighting from the bus I started to walk the long, dark road leading towards my home when I became acutely aware that someone was walking just behind me, in fact almost touching me. There had been several incidents in that neighborhood of natives snatching handbags and knocking women down. Realizing that it would be futile to run, I turned steadfastly to God for my protection and endeavored to realize that God's perfect man is the only man there actually is.

As I continued walking at an ordinary pace I could hear the footsteps immediately behind me. When I had to turn into a side road, the steps still followed me, but only for a short distance. Then a native suddenly shot past me and ran towards a clump of trees. I did not have to go as far as the trees before reaching the flat in which I was living. I can never say how grateful I was for the protection that had been mine.
