HOW AND WHY PRAYER HEALS

A Mother turns to God in prayer and a sick child quickly recovers. A businessman pressed by financial problems prays to God and finds a normal, natural way out of his troubles. A married couple torn apart by jealousy and hatred happily reunite under the dynamic impact of prayer. A soldier, an airman, a prisoner of war, each in his own way finds safe deliverance from some great peril through effective prayer.

How does prayer produce such results? Why does it work? How can one make practical prayer a part of his daily thinking and living?

There are simple, easy-to-understand answers to these questions about prayer in the opening chapter of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. In fact, "Prayer" is the title of this chapter. The opening sentence tells what prayer is and how it works. Our Leader writes (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
