ASSOCIATION DAY

Across the miles they come to keep the feast;
each to his own, yet all as one they come,
each with the first fruits of his harvest yield,
joyous, expectant, eager to be fed
with that "true bread which cometh down from heaven."

The teacher, like a shepherd, knows his flock—
the timid lamb, the straying, struggling one,
the nimble climber, and the slow of pace,
the patient, humbly working side by side—
and, like a shepherd, sees and meets each need.

And e'er the day draws to its happy close,
Love's inspiration fills each thirsty cup:
Truth's substance satisfies the hungering thought,
and Life's rich benediction whispers low,
"Go forth, dear laborers, to the fields of God."
