ALWAYS ALLAY THE FEAR

Students of Christian Science who, through their own prayers or those of more experienced workers, have been healed of physical illness and various other phases of human discord have learned that fear is always a factor in any inharmonious condition. That human thought must be purged of this in order that the allness of God may be apparent is emphasized throughout the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. In one of her statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she tells us (p. 392): "Fear, which is an element of all disease, must be cast out to readjust the balance for God. Casting out evil and fear enables truth to outweigh error."

But in those instances where fear is not immediately cast out, the allaying of it is an important first step in demonstrating the healing power of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy's precept is (ibid., p. 411), "Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients."

The allaying of fear is accomplished through an understanding of the allness, ever-presence, and omnipotence of God, in whom "we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Fear's claim to reality and power cannot persist in the presence of Truth and Love, for John has told us (I John 4:18), "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." Acceptance of these truths and rejection of the suggestions of the frightened material senses will remove the fear and uncover the specific error which seems to produce this erroneous condition. And, once uncovered, its claim to presence and reality is dissipated as the counterfeit is replaced with the counterfact or true nature of God and His reflection, man. For man, the perfect likeness of God, Love, cannot express anything so unlike God as fear.
