The occasion which led me to...

The occasion which led me to the earnest study of Christian Science was depression brought on by a condition of rheumatism and the possible necessity of giving up my work on the farm. The prospect of spending years of uselessness was most disheartening.

I had known something of Christian Science from childhood, and when I met a practitioner of this Science while visiting my brother in a distant city, I at once applied for treatment. After hearing my story she asked me to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and referred me particularly to this statement (p. 561): "The spiritual idea is clad with the radiance of spiritual Truth, and matter is put under her feet." For two weeks my study was very interesting and helpful; then the ability to learn suddenly left me. I spoke of this to the practitioner, and she assured me that in reality spiritual unfoldment is never retarded. From then on I found no difficulty in studying.

In six weeks I became aware that all pain and stiffness had gone. Also, unwanted traits of disposition had left me, and I felt lifted out of the depression I had known. From this experience came the conviction that ill-health or any other discordant condition is not final, and that the power of Christian Science is adequate for all healing.
