The words, "'Tis God's hand...

The words, "'Tis God's hand that leadeth me" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 95), have certainly proved true in my experience. After I had finished my academic education several years ago I was left with a feeling of dissatisfaction. I had enjoyed my college courses, had taken advantage of an opportunity to travel, and had been offered a good job. And yet it seemed to me that I was not a better person in any way or any happier for all these things.

While at school I had attended the services of various church denominations and investigated different philosophies. I remember thinking at the time how odd it was that one spent two or more years learning a subject like Spanish or history and still there did not appear to be any systematic way of learning how to become happier. I was sure Jesus' precepts were the right ones, but somehow they did not seem concrete enough for me.

But gradually and gently God was leading me, and as I look back now I can see the ways in which seeds of the truth were being planted. One of these ways was my reading The Christian Science Monitor in the school library; another was a visit of one of my classes to the Christian Science Publishing House; another was my attending a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at The Mother Church because I thought the people going to the service looked so pleasant; and another was my accompanying my father to a Christian Science lecture in our home town.
